		<description>EndogenesisGuest Editor Diid-issue 76&#38;nbsp;

“We’re interested in the ways design grows from people and places, in a generative process loosely led by needs and instinct and only later, shaped and into legible circumscribed solutions”

read here the issue 76&#38;nbsp;read here the academic paper&#38;nbsp;

With the term “Endogenesis”, we aim to highlight design practices and expressions that come from within, bottom-up dynamics, and understand where design belongs as a native species. The focus is dedicated to empirical and vernacu-lar knowledge, first-hand experimentations, and to chase a kind of design that is owned by people and not vice versa. A space in which to question aesthetics and revisit our semiotic biases in matters of form and beauty. Speaking in biological terms, issue 76 aims for a reflection around design as an endogenous act, that lives and grows in specific con-texts, rather than being an exogenous element implanted in existing systems with a high risk of rejection.“There is a different tradition in design that we have learned to know through the application of ethnography, anthropology, natural studies, climate studies and the study of complex social relations. This tradition flows like a river underground and occasionally rises to the surface carrying with it profound results that help us to understand design reality. What we are studying in issue number 76 of diid is a subterranean river that requires scrupulous and attentive researchers with uncommon delicacy and sensitivity to discover, understand and scientifically convey the phenomena that derive from it. We are quite far from a quantitative and experimental performance analysis, from historical research in the archives, the phenomenology of the user’s analysis and the use of the sophisticated technologies that enable the contemporary designer. Here the discussion is about how form, function, value and meaning retreat from market logic yet transform the behaviour and structure of society or individuals in a global and contemporary manner through the cultures of design and its practices.Paolo Cardini has orchestrated this observation by highlighting a community of researchers who are studying and applying these themes at the intercontinental level, and with the awe-struck curiosity of children we remain drawn to and pensive before the array of images that illustrate this issue”.

		<description>NYC Souvenirs - aka Souvenirs for AliensDaydreams from the City that never sleeps

“The Immigration and Nationality Act defines an 'alien' as any person who is not a citizen or national of the United States. Souvenirs, in the context of permanent visitors, explore the different cultural layers of our reality and the coexistence of overlapping stories, blending subjective and collective experiences.”
&#60;img width="3398" height="2268" width_o="3398" height_o="2268" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3625718e5fae78cebf4cb3c4b161c99d8e7b1c0a24e9188d59881e621d73092a/SideB.jpg" data-mid="226029354" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3625718e5fae78cebf4cb3c4b161c99d8e7b1c0a24e9188d59881e621d73092a/SideB.jpg" /&#62;

#1 Queuebicles is both a memento of a recurring NYC scene and a desktop stationery item. Both objects and people find themselves waiting—frozen in a temporary stall, anticipating something to happen. There’s a line around the block, and you can decide whether the wait is for a product drop, a paycheck, or an immigration visa. You can write on the city's walls, becoming a subtle activist who shares their rage from the comfort of their desk. And if needed, you can erase and start over. After all, doodling is a great way to pass the time.

#2&#38;nbsp;Can a souvenir become a physical package for living debris? Wraps are cultural blankets holding the complexity of a multicultural journey. The objects, wrapped in stereotyped symbols of NYC, are collected in thrift stores around the city, multiplying their value with collective memories. The wrap are also symbols of a dominant culture that slowly absorbs and conforms.

“Artificial Intelligence &#38;amp; Traditional Craft: a critical analysis of tools, access and the vernacularization of colonizing technologies”

&#60;img width="1024" height="768" width_o="1024" height_o="768" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/824ae39e93c0281d56ed15943e64ae7a2d2e21286f9250a6cc34628c517b48de/group-photo.jpeg" data-mid="195530433" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/824ae39e93c0281d56ed15943e64ae7a2d2e21286f9250a6cc34628c517b48de/group-photo.jpeg" /&#62;

Read an article about the project here&#38;nbsp;Cast bronze artisans in the colonial town of Antigua Guatemala, collaborated remotely with designers and used generative Artificial Intelligence tools to create a series of images that drove the conversation while creating a series of objects that were later fabricated using a traditional sand casting process. Here you will find a selection of images generated by the AI tool (OpenAI DALL-E) from the artisans’ text prompts, later used to create the sculptures you see on th opposite side of this exhibit. The objects created, three bronze door knockers, are representation of three ways through which the artisans operated in their daily interaction with an hypothetical client adding AI to their toolbox.

Since Industrial Design made its official debut as one of the foundational elements of the 19th-century's industrial revolution, it was clear that the dialogue between artifacts, humans, and machines got exponentially complicated, not to mention the ownership of the so-called technological progress and the inequalitarian system of power that followed. From the resistance of the Arts and Craft movement to the enthusiastic Bauhaus’ machine-oriented aesthetics, the relation between who designs and who or what produces, has frequently reconfigured the value of the different roles involved in the production process. While in modern western societies, the reaction to the capitalist economic system has fostered a revival of craft as an elitist “designer as makers” trend, in the global south the highly majority of the artisans, holding traditions and endangered skills, are still relegated to the lowest part of the society. Those vernacular makers don't usually possess the tools and technologies to evolve their production, they are frequently considered as mere executors of other’s ideas or, even worse, forced to copy mainstream products and styles. Moreover, the artifacts they produce are often stereotyped and locked in the past, on one side preserved as simulacra of local traditions and on the other side relegated to the guise of souvenirs and hugely limited in their potential present value. Looking at the contemporary advent of algorithm-based creation platforms, we may expect that the distance between the digital realm and the local material culture will keep increasing and soon be too big to bridge.

		<description>Cultural Glitch -
Venice Architecture Biennale 2025 &#38;nbsp;
“A collection of postcards from Venice—but not quite the Venice we know. Images from a city distorted by algorithmic echo chambers and culturally stereotyped views.”
By feeding a text-to-image AI the same prompt in different languages, this project reveals how cultural biases shape visual outcomes. Each postcard becomes a distorted mirror, reflecting algorithmic assumptions, linguistic privilege, and embedded cultural stereotypes. What emerges is not Venice, but a version tuned to expectations—subtly shaped by language, and echoing familiar cultural filters.

		<description>Tigeraire:air accelerator for high performance activities in extreme climate conditions

"Performative healthcare expands the notion of performance, ensuring that innovation elevates both function and well-being."

&#60;img width="2543" height="2160" width_o="2543" height_o="2160" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bc05c99358532bfe9dea8912a9bc8ee100d0addb3869373f77930069ed699af9/Pkg_2.jpg" data-mid="158741277" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bc05c99358532bfe9dea8912a9bc8ee100d0addb3869373f77930069ed699af9/Pkg_2.jpg" /&#62;

In early 2020 I started a collaboration with a promising start-up based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Tigeraire started developing air ventilation systems for American football helmets. During the pandemic, each athlete had to wear visors on their helmets to prevent the spreading of the virus. The system resulted beneficial not only for defogging the visors but studies have proved it extremely advantageous for the athletes' performance. As soon as I joined the company as design director, the business extended first to batting helmets and later to hardhat for construction workers. Especially for the hard hat, extensive studies have been conducted over the validity of the aeration system in preventing heat strokes and provide a general improvement of the healthcare condition of the workers. The first products will be launched on the market in early 2022 and the array of products includes full helmets design as well as an add-on for applications on standard shells. My role in the company is supervising and direct all the product developing processes, from ideation to prototyping, testing, and pre-engineering phases.

Using our proprietary cooling technology, we created the Cyclone v2 to deliver all day comfort for&#38;nbsp;football players in&#38;nbsp;some of the hottest and most humid environments.&#38;nbsp;Air movement over the skin can accelerate the evaporation of sweat,&#38;nbsp;reducing body temperature,&#38;nbsp;making&#38;nbsp;athletes feel cooler and more comfortable. Lightweight and powerful, the Cyclone v2 is designed to fit inside your football helmet and accelerate air over your entire face.&#38;nbsp;Powered&#38;nbsp;by&#38;nbsp;built-in, rechargeable, LiPo batteries that&#38;nbsp;can&#38;nbsp;run nonstop&#38;nbsp;for&#38;nbsp;over 300 minutes on a single charge, the&#38;nbsp;Cyclone v2 fits snugly in&#38;nbsp;any&#38;nbsp;compatible football helmet and is safe for all ages.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Please refer to the FAQs for a list of compatible football helmets.

(@ Vinnova Sweadish Governamental Innovation Agency)

“From Micro Narratives to Macro Visions”

In 2022 the Sweadish governamental Innovation Agency Vinnova opened a call for proposals extended to Sweadish citizens willing to explore future scenarios and engage with the challage to create tangible experiences of those hypothetical futures. For this project I was one of speculative design experts invited by Vinnova and hired as mentor to guide an interdisciplary group of people lead by the artist Mariella Ottosson with some of the personnel from the Malmo-based innovation hub Mediaevolution. The project was presented during The Conference event in Malmö&#38;nbsp; and the partecipants had the opportunity to live and learn about a future in which the interspieces relation between algea and humans served as a window into a future of the city of Malmö where the water rising is a present threat.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;

&#60;img width="1357" height="1712" width_o="1357" height_o="1712" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8c7666efc84d45bf69467d5873d6ebea4b320b5f70a95d8e1fd2276dfab7b01f/V4.jpg" data-mid="218217344" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8c7666efc84d45bf69467d5873d6ebea4b320b5f70a95d8e1fd2276dfab7b01f/V4.jpg" /&#62;
&#60;img width="1357" height="1711" width_o="1357" height_o="1711" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/80e8396d29fc02bc16900db66bb2136b9a57a7ce74bec58919bedfc8643ae833/V3.jpg" data-mid="218217343" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/80e8396d29fc02bc16900db66bb2136b9a57a7ce74bec58919bedfc8643ae833/V3.jpg" /&#62;

There is a sort of directionality in future thinking. Traditional futuring techniques and the craft of future scenarios are usually built on the axis that goes from macro to micro. The study of global socio-economic trends, the analysis of technological shifts, the growth of the world’s population or the planetarian stock of resources all represent some of the primary steps towards the unwrapping of the new realities we should expect ourselves to be living in. However, while the bird’s-eye view is vital and effective in capturing macro-evolutions and systemic changes, little is often left to the individual, the narrow personal perspectives of who will live those new life paradigms. This is the conceptual framework behind the story of Martha,&#38;nbsp; a factory worker who's in charge to bring visitors inside her life and narrate them what it looks like living&#38;nbsp; in an era of post-climate disruption.

The projects outcomes include, an installation, a workshop and a publication.

The experiencial project, made of a series of diagetic prototypes and immersive interactive installations, gave the opportunity to visitors and partecipantrs to engage in first-person with the future scenario immagined by the Malmö team.&#38;nbsp;

The Speculation, based on the finctional idea of an algae factory which discovered a way to communicate with the underwater vegetation, invited partecipants to listen to the story of Martha. As one of the algae factory workers, her voice was broadcasted telling the story of her everyday life and what if feels like living that potential future reality.

The Installation was divided into three experiences. The first one was verbal, an engaging story told by the fictional character Martha. The second one was phisical, a walking journey through a simulation of the algae lingual lab. The third was intellectual, an archive on materials and book to inform and educate people on climate change and global sea level rising.

		<description>Future Skin,NIKE &#38;amp; RISD research project &#38;nbsp;

“We’re inter-ested in the ways design grows from people and places, in a generative process loosely led by needs and instinct and only later, shaped and into legible circumscribed solutions”

&#60;img width="3264" height="2448" width_o="3264" height_o="2448" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/fd3696215c5e302355f57b2681eb5cc5bab853da14d3fff74ec0bfd22baa9e28/IMG_3734.JPG" data-mid="158735307" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/fd3696215c5e302355f57b2681eb5cc5bab853da14d3fff74ec0bfd22baa9e28/IMG_3734.JPG" /&#62;

read here&#38;nbsp;an intro essay to the project

Beginning in late 2014, six faculty and 38 students from across RISD's 16 undergraduate and graduate disciplines entered the word of skin: as mask, filter, metaphor, mediator, narrator, protector, generator and much more.&#38;nbsp; The collaborative team considered skin to be a lens through which to imagine how the unique and diverse capacities of dermis might attain entirely new meaning and relevance in a speculative future that is both advanced and richly encumbered. Beginning with a workshop, in which a diverse group of Nike's specialists shared their expertise in materials, color, culture and user experience;opening venues for students to consider cocepts of skin, while offering platforms from which to jump. The groups came together weekly to share their developing propositions and exchange reactions and insights. Mid-way though the project, the faculty and representatives from each research group travelled to NIke's Oregon headquarter to witness the synchrony of Nike's history, products, facilities and creative culture. Offered as an experimental research model, and operating outside of the traditional academic calendar, students gathered bi-weekly in small groups to loosen their own understanding and preconceptions of skin and imagine seven speculative scenarios in which skin may assume a new range of applications and relevance.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The scenarios created are frames through which we rediscover skin as we&#38;nbsp; confront our future selves in a world where energy generation is personal, surface narrative is transactional, signs of age are currency and environmental exposure is a deadly constant. Each scenario gave birth to a series of objects, or concepts, able to carry the idea of "future of skin". The proposals didn't want to provide solutions or solve short-term problems, but their aim is to highlight criticisms and opportunities we could potentially confront in the future.

		<description>Speculative Healthcare,Future scenarios on wellbeing for Johnson&#38;amp;Johnson. &#38;nbsp;

“By challenging today's healthcare norms, we uncover the futures we truly need—not just the ones we're given.”

&#60;img width="3024" height="3024" width_o="3024" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8523b7d87e7418364eb4a258dd003c0ae5a516c090aabb581a89f75dd1e22061/IMG_0258.JPG" data-mid="158736153" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8523b7d87e7418364eb4a258dd003c0ae5a516c090aabb581a89f75dd1e22061/IMG_0258.JPG" /&#62;
This two days workshop was organized in response to Johnson&#38;amp;Johnson's interest in exploring possible synergies between creativity, future thinking and healthcare. Critical and Speculative design are two of the modern design tools that can help companies identifying and evaluate future research directions and investments. The workshop was designed specifically to highlight how social and ethical constructs, weaved together with scientific and technological advancement, can generate a series of possible/plausible scenario from which to learn and reflect.

Five different groups, composed of J&#38;amp;J people and RISD students, engaged in conversations about our society, how we define well-being and what are the criticisms connected to it. The workshop started with a lecture about the conceptual framework behind critical and speculative design. Through the analysis of various case studies, the groups were exposed to a different way to explore the tomorrow,&#38;nbsp; not in the shape of traditional future forecasting but rather as a debate on the desirability or harmfulness of alternative realities.

Each group worked on the creation of a science-fiction story in which the topics of healthcare and well-being were approached from multiple perspectives.

Those stories were then transformed into potential design services, systems or products capable of linking fictional ideas with everyday life and pointing out problematics and implications of our present choices.

Tools to front the mythological multitaskers

“The relationship between technology and humans is a delicate balance between enhancement and the illusion of it ”

more about this project at&#38;nbsp;TED Talk - 2.8 million viewers and translated in 50 languages

How efficient is Multitasking? Let’s consider for a while the option of Monotask. Someone define multitasking as an act of procrastination which allow us to lie on the surface of the problems. Others tell us the story about Super Taskers, who are the only 2% percent of the world population able to really control multiple activities at the same time...but what about the rest of us, what about our daily lives? The Monotask project is a series of front covers to downgrade our hyper super smartphones into the essence of their functions. The files of each cover are available for free to be downloaded and 3d printed on Thingiverse.com. The project has been present at TED Global 2012 and since then has attracted the attention of the media all around the world. Article about this project has been written in multiple languages and thousands of people are still partecipating in the debate that this project has been able to create. From West to East, from productivity to spiritualism, from ironic takes to serious elucubration, the absurdity of the Monotasking covers didn't stop but rather stimulate a global multidisciplinary conversation on our nature as human beings versus the potential offered by our technologies. This project invites to reflect about the present technological determinism and consider the option of a much needed social constructivism in which is not technology that shape society but viceversa.
